Role of Social Media in exploring parental expectations regarding usage and providing education on nebulized medication in children
Conclusions: This is the first large study on nebulized medication aspects in children in our country. Almost all children received unnecessary nebulized medication for many trivial respiratory diseases. An efficient way to improve education and decrease erroneous inhalation techniques is Social Media, by means of brief demonstration videos, in native language.

Multiple myeloma: 2013 update on diagnosis, risk‐stratification, and management
Disease overviewMultiple myeloma accounts for approximately 10% of hematologic malignancies. DiagnosisThe diagnosis requires 10% or more clonal plasma cells on bone marrow examination or a biopsy proven plasmacytoma plus evidence of associated end‐organ damage. In addition, the presence of 60% or more clonal plasma cells in the marrow is also considered as myeloma regardless of the presence or absence of end‐organ damage. Risk stratificationIn the absence of concurrent trisomies, patients with 17p deletion, t(14;16), and t(14;20) are considered to have high‐risk myeloma. Patients with t(4;14) translocation are consid...

Immunoglobulin light chain amyloidosis: 2013 update on diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment
Disease OverviewImmunoglobulin (Ig) light chain amyloidosis is a clonal, nonproliferative plasma cell disorder in which fragments of Ig light chain are deposited in tissues. Clinical features depend on organs involved but can include restrictive cardiomyopathy, nephrotic syndrome, hepatic failure, peripheral/autonomic neuropathy, and atypical multiple myeloma. DiagnosisTissue biopsy stained with Congo red demonstrating amyloid deposits with apple‐green birefringence is required for diagnosis. Invasive organ biopsy is not required because amyloid deposits can be found in bone marrow biopsy or subcutaneous fat aspirate in ...

Waldenström macroglobulinemia: 2013 update on diagnosis, risk stratification, and management
Disease OverviewWaldenström macroglobulinemia (WM) is a lymphoplasmacytic lymphoma with immunoglobulin M (IgM) monoclonal protein. Clinical features include anemia, thrombocytopenia, hepatosplenomegaly, and lymphadenopathy. DiagnosisThe presence of IgM monoclonal protein associated with ≥10% clonal lymphoplasmacytic cells in bone marrow confirms the diagnosis. Risk StratificationAge, hemoglobin level, platelet count, β2 microglobulin, and monoclonal IgM concentrations are characteristics required for prognosis. Risk‐Adapted TherapyNot all patients who fulfill WM criteria require therapy; these patients can be observe...

Multiple myeloma: 2014 Update on diagnosis, risk‐stratification, and management
Disease overview: Multiple myeloma accounts for approximately 10% of hematologic malignancies. Diagnosis: The diagnosis requires 10% or more clonal plasma cells on bone marrow examination or a biopsy proven plasmacytoma plus evidence of associated end‐organ damage. If end‐organ damage is not present, the presence of 60% or more clonal plasma cells in the marrow is also considered as myeloma. Risk stratification: In the absence of concurrent trisomies, patients with 17p deletion, t(14;16), and t(14;20) are considered to have high‐risk myeloma. Patients with t(4;14) translocation are considered intermediate‐risk. All...

Emergency Considerations in COVID-19 Vaccine Administration
Conclusion The joint response of science and medicine to develop safe and effective COVID-19 vaccines has been brisk and productive. Distribution efforts will now be the next step in limiting the breadth of this pandemic. EMS agencies will play a key role in some areas in the administration of vaccinations for their communities. The authors suggest that to better clarify the side effects of the COVID-19 vaccines, EMS systems must maintain a log of the type and incidence of adverse events following vaccine administration, EMS responses to the adverse events, as well as those patients’ outcomes from this management. ...

Dexamethasone to prednisolone rotation relieved hiccups in colorectal cancer patient continuing teleworking during anticancer therapy
We present a case of chemotherapy-induced hiccups that were alleviated by steroid rotation. Hiccups are often overlooked, but they have an impact on the patient's quality of life. In the COVID-19 era, web-based teleworking has become an important tool, hiccups during a teleconference should be noted as a concern for patients.PMID:37351354 | PMC:PMC10282110 | DOI:10.1002/ccr3.7367

Eosinophilic small bowel enteritis in response to folinic acid, fluorouracil, and oxaliplatin chemotherapy.
Abstract A 70-year-old woman being treated with folinic acid, fluorouracil, and oxaliplatin (FOLFOX) therapy for relapsed colon cancer metastatic to the lung presented to the hospital with a 1-week history of abdominal pain, anorexia, a 1-day history of diarrhea, and a fever of 101°F. Neutropenia and a peripheral eosinophilia were present, and computed tomogram of the abdomen showed thickening of the wall of a segment of small bowel with luminal stenosis. Colonoscopy and double-balloon small bowel enteroscopy found a stenosis in the ileum that upon biopsy revealed small bowel eosinophilic enteritis. She improved ...

Perioperative corticosteroids for preventing complications following facial plastic surgery.
CONCLUSIONS: There is limited evidence for rhinoplasty that a single perioperative dose of corticosteroids decreases oedema and ecchymosis formation over the first two postoperative days, but the difference is not maintained after this period. There is also limited evidence that high doses of corticosteroids decrease both ecchymosis and oedema between the first and seventh postoperative days. The clinical significance of this decrease is unknown and there is little evidence available regarding the safety of this intervention. More studies are needed because at present the available evidence does not support the use of cort...

Should we be concerned when COVID-19-positive patients take opioids to control their pain? Insights from a pharmacological point of view
CONCLUSIONS: Clinicians should keep in mind the frequent DDIs with drugs extensively metabolized by the CYP450 system and prefer opioids undergoing a limited hepatic metabolism. Identification and management of DDIs and dissemination of the related knowledge should be a major goal in the delivery of chronic care to ensure optimized patient outcomes and facilitate updating recommendations for COVID-19 therapy in frail populations, namely comorbid, poly-medicated patients or individuals suffering from substance use disorder.PMID:34337735 | DOI:10.26355/eurrev_202107_26399
